South Africa
I’ll be traveling to a rural region of South Africa to be a live-in volunteer with a one of a kind orphanage that takes in children with end of life or palliative care needs. While living with the children and working with the inspiring clinical staff of the orphanage, I will explore how the hospice orphanage enables children with often complex or terminal diseases to live as well as possible in the time that they do have and what it means to create a home for the dying. Additionally, I will be exploring the language used to discuss clinical decisions and disease progression with children in the unique scenario where there are no guardians to refer to. How are choices given to these children and made for or with them?
